Academy Swim Club

When Nikki Miller came home from a lunch date with her husband, Jim, one afternoon in 1994, she found out that her 1-year-old son had crawled into their spa while the babysitter was inside the house on the phone.Academy Swim Club - Santa Clarita

Fortunately, her 4-year-old swimmer was able to pull his brother, who had already ingested a large amount of water, out of the spa and save his life. This was when Nikki and Jim knew that they wanted to dedicate their time and energy to promoting and teaching water safety education.

Academy Swim Club – Santa Clarita

They opened their state-of-the-art, private Santa Clarita facility, Academy Swim Club, in 2004; it has been recognized as the Best Swim School in the Santa Clarita Valley. Their mission is to inspire families to learn to swim “by creating a safe, fun, and friendly atmosphere and teaching exceptional, developmentally appropriate swimming and fitness skills that build self-esteem, confidence, and character.”

The Academy Swim Club has swimming programs for all ages, including Parent-n-Me swim classes, private, semi-private, and group swimming lessons, physical therapy, family swim time, private parties, and even classes with attention to special needs children.

The Aquatic Safety Awareness Program (ASAP) is a non-profit that was founded by Nikki and Jim Miller, also the owners of the Academy Swim Club. Like the Academy Swim Club, ASAP allows the Millers to educate the community about the importance of water safety. The program’s mission is to reduce the number of drownings of children under the age of 5 by “providing resources to schools and pediatricians to work together with families to raise Water Smart Babies.”

Water Smart Babies encourages pediatricians to remind parents of the importance of water safety by prescribing the fences around pools, learning CPR, and swim lessons for their child, at their 9-month and 12-month check-ups. ASAP has also implemented the Safer 3 program, which allows them to bring water safety to the classroom. The week-long lesson plan, created the by the Swim for Life Foundation, is funded by the National Drowning Prevention Alliance and ASAP so that it may be taught at local preschool and kindergarten classes by the child’s own teacher.

To find out more about this life-saving organization, visit www.asapsocal.org or call (661) 702-8585. Remember, drowning is preventable!
