Each year high school students, grade 9-12, in the 25th Congressional District are invited to participate in the annual Congressional Art Competition. Sponsored by the Congressional Institute, KHTS AM 1220 and Fastframe Valencia, each congressional district across the nation hosts a district-wide art competition to encourage student artistic challenge. The winning piece of artwork from each district will hang in the Cannon Tunnel of the U.S. Capitol for an entire year.
“I’ve been amazed by the remarkable talent that I have seen from our local students over the years for this competition,” said Congressman Howard P. “Buck” McKeon. “The winning submission is put on display in our Capitol tunnel for all to see when they come to visit and I always enjoy seeing the artwork displayed as I walk to the Capitol. I am looking forward to seeing this year’s entries.”
Over the years the Congressional Art Competition has seen several wonderful submissions of artwork. Previous winners have included Yeon Whan Yoon from Hart High School, Marissa Embola from Saugus High School, Jordan Recchia from Valencia High Schoo, Laura Peskay from Hart High School and Michaela Jenkins of Palmdale.
“It just provides an opportunity for everybody, and it gives us, as local store owners, the ability to participate in the community,” said Randy Burzynski, co-owner of FastFrame Valencia. “We’ve hosted it for a number of years now.”
