 Families in Action – “Families in Action” is a non-profit organization which aims at parents and teens searching for support and help in their relationships. Host Cary Quashen has a long history of working in the field of behavioral, alcohol and drug treatment for teens since 1978, and is a nationally recognized expert. Every Monday from noon1 p.m., join Cary Quashen and his co-host Stephanie Weiss, for discussion on issues impacting the relationships between parents and their teens today. STTOP - The STTOP program, implemented in April 2004, asks residents who observe reckless teen driving to call a toll-free number (877-310-STOP) and report the incident and provide a license plate number to the Sheriff’s Department. Since its inception, the program has resulted in well over 400 reports of careless driving. (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) – Santa Clarita’s Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) set up educational exhibits at many local events such as the Emergency Expo, for more information, click here. http://www.maddaboutcars.org/ Safe Rides – This program is both free and confidential, offering teens who have had too much to drink a ride home. For more information, click here. http://www.scvsaferides.com/ Every 15 Minutes – National studies have shown that every 15 Minutes someone dies in a traffic accident. In an effort to educate teens of the costs of drunk driving, the Santa Clarita Sheriff’s Department launched an bi-annual 2 day “Every 15 Minutes” program at local high schools. This graphic dramatization of drunk driving involves students role playing both the victims and the drunk driver. Teens are pulled out of class and act out a drunk driving accident scene. The “injured” are then taken to the hospital, while the “dead” are taken to the morgue, and the “drunk driver” is booked at the Sheriff’s Station. The parents of the “victims” are even notified of their child’s death. Concluding the event, is a trip to the Central Park Youth Grove, dedicated to the 67 local youth who have died in traffic accidents.
