“The program is open to any full-time classroom teacher in Los Angeles County who is looking to fund an innovative classroom learning opportunity,” according to the CCU. “The project should have clearly defined learning objectives tied to students’ academic needs, display creativity, and benefit a significant number of students.”
Ten grants of $500 each will be awarded to teachers in November, according to officials. The application deadline is Oct. 19.
“We were founded to serve the education community, and we can’t think of a better way to continue that commitment than helping teachers bring new and exciting programs into their classrooms,” said Steve O’Connell, CCU President and CEO. “We hope this grant encourages teachers to make their dream project a reality for their students, and ask any teacher who has a class project idea that needs a little extra funding to apply for one of our grants.”
Schools benefiting from last year’s program used the funds towards initiatives such as special education, business concepts, solar energy, water conservation and literacy, according to the financial institution.
Since the creation of the program in 2012, California Credit Union has awarded more than $65,000 in teacher grants to benefit students across Southern California. The biannual program offers up to 20 grants in the spring and fall to teachers across Los Angeles and San Diego counties, where CCU has 24 branches, according to a statement.
