A monthly art happening in Newhall
Date:5/2/20137:00 PM – 11:00 PM
Main Street in Old Town Newhall
Santa Clarita, California91355
ART SLAM is a monthly art happening, which will feature a variety of art, entertainment, and activities centered around a theme. Several themes have been discussed by some artists in the community including: LIGHT, SOUND, WATER, and ICE CREAM! Many of the ART SLAM events will see artists’ responding to a theme by developing interactive opportunities for the public, installations of art work, gallery shows featuring several artists, etc. For the evening, the block/area will be transformed into an open air gallery.
ART SLAM will occur monthly from March to October on the First Thursday of the month between 7 pm and 11 pm in Old Town Newhall between Lyons and 9th street (sometimes beyond this block). ART SLAM will utilize the existing space in this area including parking lots and open property (City owned pad where the old Community Center used to be). In addition, ART SLAM will develop partnerships with local businesses to access their space, as well as include their programming in the monthly event. The Newhall Library, The Vu, The American Legion, Billy’s and others could take an active role in the monthly event by developing concerts, hosting art, presenting performance art pieces, etc.
The ART SLAM concept steps away from labels, and will attempt to develop a new art event for the City of Santa Clarita. It will not be a mini SENSES. The ART SLAM will have its own identity, branding, and by the very nature of it being an art centric event, distinguish itself from the Street Party approach of SENSES.
LIGHT SLAM will be the inaugural event on Thursday, March 7. Artists from the region will descend into Newhall to display their light inspired art. Partners include Visual Terrain, The Museum of Neon Art (MONA), CalArts, ARTree, Odius, and others.
