Canyon prepares for a Foothill League regular season game against Valencia.

Vikings Start Season Strong, Sail to Easy 47-7 Win

The Valencia Vikings beat the Canyon Cowboys 47-7 on Friday to get the Foothill League regular season started.

The Vikings scored early and often in this one, amassing 41 points in the first half on just three first downs. The Cowboys had no answers for Valencia on either side of the ball, as the Vikings offense scored seven total touchdowns while the defense held Canyon to just seven total points.

Senior quarterback Davis Cop led his Vikings to their commanding 41-0 halftime lead by completing 8-of-12 passes for 169 yards and three touchdowns. Cop connected with a variety of receivers, but Senior wideout Jaden Holmes was the go-to guy of the night securing three catches for 86 yards and two touchdowns.

After that stellar first half performance, Cop enjoyed some rest on the sideline as Junior quarterbacks Ethan Aguillon and Ryan Morrison both saw action in the second half of play.

To compliment Valencia’s excellent passing performance, Junior running back Jake Santos provided 101 yards on the ground with two touchdowns of his own on just four carries. It was an easy, efficient night for the Vikings as Canyon could not make any stops.

A 47-7 loss is a tough way for any team to start their season, but Canyon’s woes might continue this year after a 2-3 record to finish the preseason, and a very underwhelming performance against Valencia. Starting from the 2015-16 season, Canyon has a cumulative Foothill League record of just 2-13.

Valencia is the toughest competition in the league this year, and Canyon will hope to bounce back next week against West Ranch (1-0) and their turbo-charged offense (49.3 PPG).

Off to a 1-0 start and on the right track to maintain their dominance, the Vikings will play the rest of their games at home this year with an inviting matchup against Golden Valley (0-1) next Friday at 7 p.m.
