Melissa Mustamandy of Pilates Teck talks about the many facets of pilates…

Crystal Lacy Edwards is joined this week by Melissa Mustamandy, instructor at Pilates Teck, to talk about the many facets of pilates, and some of the history behind the popular physical fitness system.

Melissa has been a group exercise instructor for thirteen years gives some brief history of the pilates method, and how they can be used to improve your health.

German native Joseph Pilates crafted his own type of exercise but then began using to rehabilitate soldiers in the first World War. Pilates concentrates on improving flexibility, strengthening and balancing the body through controlled exercises.

After moving overseas, Joseph Pilates set up shop in New York amongst many dance studios, where the dancers caught wind of the rehabilitative power of the Pilates system.

“If you have been introduced to pilates though the rehabilitation side of it then that’s what you know, or if you have come in to it through the exercise side of it then that’s usually all you know of it.”

Though the fitness craze of the late 80’s had an impact on the popularity of pilates, it is the preservation of integrity in pilates that has kept it at the forefront of exercise systems throughout the world.

“It is highly modifiable, and can be adjusted for anybody.”
