City Starting New Program Aimed at Drunk Drivers

More traffic enforcement and safer streets are coming to Santa Clarita in the coming years.  New equipment purchases and increased special traffic enforcement measures are on tap as a result of a recent $393,936 grant awarded to the City of Santa Clarita and Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station. The City and Sheriff’s Department are dedicated to keeping our roadways safe through both enforcement and education.

“The Santa Clarita DUI Enforcement and Comprehensive Traffic Safety Program aims to reduce the number of alcohol-involved fatal and injury collisions through enforcement and education,” commented Council member Laurene Weste.

Last year, there were 52 alcohol-involved fatal and injury collisions in Santa Clarita, and a total of 367 DUI arrests were made.

Funding for the program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.  Funds will be used to implement a DUI Enforcement and Traffic Safety Program over the next two years.

“When more people drive sober and safely, we save lives, families, and heartache,” said Christopher J. Murphy, Director of the Office of Traffic Safety.  “This grant will help make Santa Clarita just that much safer of a place to live and work.”

Enforcement efforts will include monthly DUI checkpoints and DUI saturation patrols; establishing a DUI warrant service patrol, hot sheet, court sting operations, and stakeout operations concentrating on repeat DUI offenders on probation.  Other efforts will include automating citations, DUI investigation, collision scene mapping, and report-writing.

Additionally, the program will promote teen safe driving through STTOP, Every 15 Minutes, and the Youth Grove; purchase and install pole-mounted radar speed display signs; and work closely with community
organizations to promote traffic safety programs and increase public awareness.
