College Of The Canyons Officials Add New Summer Session Beginning June 24

College of the Canyons officials have announced the addition of a new five-week summer session beginningJune 24, with students and community members from across the region encouraged to search the college’s growing schedule of classes and register for their seat today!

In an effort to ensure that all students are able to secure access to the courses they need to graduateand/or transfer, the college has added more than 100 class sections of high-demand courses in a wide range of academic subjects and disciplines.

Classes will be offered at both the COC Valencia and Canyon Country campuses, and online.

The move to expand the college’s 2013 summer schedule — already one of the largest ever offered at COC — was made possible thanks in large part to restored funding levels brought on by the passage of Prop. 30 in November 2012.

The majority of class sections will be made up of courses that most students need to either graduate, transfer to a four-year school and/or meet prerequisites, providing an excellent opportunity for students to get a jump start on their course work before the start of the fall semester in August.

In addition, a number of elective and exploratory courses, which students often use to help determine their desired educational/career track, have also been included in the schedule.

The expanded summer session will also provide a tremendous economic value for students attending a local California State University (CSU) or University of California (UC) campus who want to accumulate additional units — while saving money in the process.

Summer 2013 enrollment fees at all 112 California Community Colleges are $46-per-unit, as mandated by the state of California.

As an added bonus, the first 2,000 students that register for a course during the summer session beginning June 24 will receive a free $50 voucher to use at the COC bookstore.

Students and community members looking to enroll in a summer course at College of the Canyons are also encouraged to attend the college’s “one-stop shop” student registration/orientation events ‘Big Summer Rush’ from noon to 7 p.m. Friday, June 21 and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 22 at the Valencia campus Library/Learning Center facility (LTLC).

During the ‘Big Summer Rush’ events college staff from a variety of key student services departments will be available to provide personalized, on-site services designed to help students apply, register and enroll, including:

·      File an application for admission to the college (new student, returning student) and/or completing a special admissions form (high school students)

·      Complete the math and English assessment (if required)

·      Attend a brief counseling orientations session

·      Apply for financial aid

·      Obtain a student ID card

·      Create a MyCanyons account, register for classes and pay associated student fees

The ‘Big Summer Rush’ events are open to all interested students and community members and will include the presence of music and food trucks.

Parking will be free in all of the college’s student lots during the ‘Big Summer Rush’ events. For direct access to the event, attendees are encouraged to park in the college’s South Parking Lot #15, located adjacent to the college’s LTLC and accessible via the University Center Drive entrance off Rockwell Canyon Road.

A schedule of classes for the college’s new summer session will be available online at www.canyons.edu beginning Wednesday, June 12. A printed schedule will not be offered to students.
