Crawford Fleming Golf Tournament Tees Off

164 golfers lined up Monday morning at Valencia Country Club to golf in the name of breast cancer awareness.

The Crawford Fleming Breast Cancer Awareness Golf Invitational entered its eighth year of fundraising under pristine golfing conditions, with the sun ducking behind a few clouds and a nice breeze picking up in the late morning.

The event is a key fundraiser for the Sheila R. Veloz Breast Imaging Center which was opened in 2002. The center was essentially built with community funds and it remains that events like this one, help ensure that the Breast Imaging Center will continue to be on the cutting edge of Breast Cancer detection.

“This money helps us plan for the future. Updating our equipment can cost a lot of money, and this gives us the ability to make good, wise decisions and get the best technology for the center.” According to Bob Hudson, CFO of Henry Mayo Hospital.

When the golf invitational began eight years ago, it was a small event, with the first year drawing eight golfers, and the second year 46. Last year, the event provided the Sheila R. Veloz Breast Imaging Center with a check for 118,000 dollars. This year they hope to exceed that.
