Families in Action – Monday, April 22, 2013
Hosts Cary Quashen and Bob Sharits open to the show returning to the topic of the resurgence of heroin and methamphetamine around the Santa Clarita Valley.
The month of April marks the 27th National Alcohol Awareness month.
Alcoholism is the nation’s number one public health problem.
18 million Americans, or one in every 13, suffer from alcohol abuse.
Fifty-three percent of American men and women report that somebody they know has a problem with alcohol abuse.
Christine joins the show to share her life experience battling drug and alcohol abuse.
The ages nine to 12 are the years where many children first begin to use drugs and alcohol.
Christine shares her beginnings with drinking and using drugs from an early age, and how it began as something innocent, but progressed into something much worse. “Before I started drinking, I said, ‘I’d never do those drugs.’”
Cary Quashen comments, “Our reasoning to reason goes out the window after a few drinks.”
After returning to heavily drinking every day, Christine, who at this time was the mother of a 15 month old daughter, decided she needed to seek help for her alcohol abuse.
With the help of others, she got a call from her soon to be sponsor from Action Family Counseling.
Christine now has seven months sober.
“The physical dependency is the easiest part to get past, it is the emotions the follow soon after getting sober that is the most difficult part.”
