Families in Action: April 28, 2014
Welcome to Families in Action with your hosts Cary Quashen and Bob Sharits on Santa Clarita’s Hometown Station, AM 1220 KHTS.
April is Alcohol awareness month, so we spend a lot of time telling listeners that there is no difference between drugs and alcohol. Other than nicotine, Alcohol causes far more problems than any other drugs. 51% adults 18 and older are current regular years and 17.6 million abuse alcohol. As of February 2011, alcohol is to blame for 2.5 million a deaths a year. Between the ages of 15 and 59, the leading risk factor that contributes so death is alcohol. Over half a million children between the ages 9 to 12 abuse alcohol. 6.5 million minors live with an alcoholic parent and 40 to 60% of the disease is genetic. Not only is the person who is drinking is affected by alcohol, everyone around them is affected.
Tim joins Families in Action to demonstrate what the progression of alcoholism is like. Tim has been trying to get sober since the summer of 2000, but he has been sober for 49 days. It is a difficult challenge becoming sober. Often times people just do not understand why they can’t not drink. We often manipulate ourselves to think we can have just a little. Our own mind talks us into thinking we don’t have a problem, and we can have some and not get out of control.
