Families in Action – Monday, April 29, 2013
Hosts Cary Quashen and Bob Sharits wrap up a series of shows in conjunction with the 27th straight national Alcohol Awareness month, which takes place every April to raise awareness about the dangers of alcohol and alcohol abuse.
They begin by talking about the effects on children in a household that has alcohol abuse.
The loss or predictability is the first thing children have to deal with when their parents are abusing alcohol.
“Do as I say, not as I do,” Cary says on the influence parents have on their children, “that’s just not how it works.”
The addictive gene inside alcoholics can be both inherited and learned from our parents or even grandparents.
“We don’t want to believe our kids are that bad.”
Guest speaker, Gary Schroeder, who is a certified addiction counselor, comes on the show to share his experiences in alcoholism and it’s effects on his family.
After the passing of his wife, Gary returned to alcohol use after seven years of sobriety.
He explains that his two daughters lost not only their mother, but their father as well.
On the recovery process, Gary says, “the physical sobriety is only the beginning.”
Role reversal, or “parenthefacation”, as Bob calls it, is a common attribute to occur when children have to take the role of caretaker when their parents are addicts.
“For a kid, your parents are your whole world, and it’s falling apart.”
The show wraps up with some solutions when looking to treating yourself or a loved when confronted with alcohol abuse.
