Families in Action: Monday August 18, 2014
With the devastating news of Robin William’s death, the radio hosts of ACTION Family Counseling wanted to firstly address the issue of suicide. Bob Sharita and Cary Quashen deal with hundreds of teens and young adults all around southern California that often have suicidal thoughts. They understand the emotional, mental, spiritual and even physical signs of suicidal tendencies. They have the real life experience of being the person on the other side of the phone when a suicidal teennager calls someone for help. Cary Quashen shared many of these personal experiences live on air. For example, Cary explicitly prefaced his story with his perspective on suicide. Simply put, he said, “Suicide is a permanent solution for a temporary problem” and unfortunately, there have been times where teens have called Cary after they have swallowed a mouthful of prescription drugs and realizing the weight of the situation, call Cary proclaiming they “don’t want to die.” Sadly, Cary recalls a moment where he was not able to save a loved one. So they invited Dilyse Diaz, M.A., L.M.F.T. to speak in detail about the history of society’s perception of suicide, why people consider it in the first place, and how to prevent it.
