Families in Action: December 23, 2013
Welcome to Families in Action on your Hometown Station, AM 1220 KHTS. Jeff Zhorne joins the show in studio to talk about how to handle grief over the holidays. Grief can come from more than just a loss in the family. It can come from divorce or moving. One of the largest reasons a child will start to consider depression is moving. They lose their home and their friends and it is a large source of grief for these kids.
This time of year can be really hard for a lot of people. You don’t know when it will hit you, you can be driving and hear a song or seeing that empty chair at the christmas dinner table. In today’s society, we do not grieve together. We are taught to keep your head down, work through it and push it to the back of our mind, and we live in a world where people experience more grief and more loss. We live in a society where we are cocooning. We isolate ourselves and don’t give ourselves a chance to experience other people and properly grieve. Now we feel loss and we look out in the world, and it feels like it keeps going. Nothing changes in the world and that can be hard for a lot of people. A therapist will say you have to let go and move on, but people will say let go from what and move on to where.
