On today’s show, guest Mike Dougherty discusses the problem of depression during the holidays. Mike started in television broadcasting in high school. He worked for CBS and is considered to be the “Dick Clark of Alaska”.

Mike stated that some patients can be placed in the behavioral health unit against their wishes. People can get very depressed during the holidays.  People who suffer from clinical depression have trouble living in everyday life. Mike had to deal with the hardness of losing his son before the holidays. Some families can experience feelings of pain during the holidays.

When it comes to depression you must learn to grieve together and recognize when you are not happy during the holidays. Reaching out to professionals is a solid idea if you are dealing with depression. It is very important to be wise about who you ask for advice from. Therapists and pastors are a solid option because they will genuinely help by listening to you. If anyone in your family suffers from depression, Spanish and English speaking parent-teen support groups are available.

Here are some tips for making your holiday season more enjoyable. The holidays are not perfect so do not expect them to be. Let go of some traditions but also create others. Set aside your differences during the holidays. Do not sweat the small stuff because in reality no one can ruin your day. Also, make a resolution during the holidays to not have alcohol. Therefore, don’t use the holidays as an excuse to drink and don’t abandon you healthy habits. Finally, stick to a budget and don’t try and be in so many places at once. These tips can help make your holiday safe and enjoyable.
