Families in Action: February 10, 2014

Welcome to Families in Action on your Hometown Station AM-1220 KHTS.

Hopefully we never stop the conversation about young people becoming addicted to opiates, heroin, alcohol and all the other addictive substances out there. It’s important we stay aware of the risks out there for our children. Lately, there has been out of the blue, a rise of crystal meth addicts calling into our office. But the good thing out of all of this is, people are coming in for treatment.

Recently there has been some talks about one of the most recent bills in effect. The “Good Samaritan 911 Call” bill came into effect on January 2013. Normally, when someone overdoses, they are not alone, but when they are found, they are. Doctors often talk about times when a car pulls up, drops off their friend who has overdosed, and drive away. Now if someone is using drugs and their friends overdose, they now have “limited immunity” and will not get arrested.  there are now billboards saying ”Don’t Run, Call 911”.

Krissy shares her experience of a loved one dying of an overdose, and how it may have been prevented. Krissy is an advocate for the law after having a son who overdosed. There are now colleges who are applying their own good samaritan rules on campus. Emergency providers can administer treatment if notified as soon as possible. Don’t be afraid to call 911, a life could be saved.

Be sure to listen to the whole podcast so you don’t miss a thing.
