Families in Action: June 2, 2014

First off we want to say congratulations to all the graduates.  Summer is here and you need to make sure you keep spending time with your children no matter what time of year it is.  At least during the school year, there is structure.  Now that it’s summer, the parents are at work but the kids are home alone with unstructured time.  Every school year our groups swell up, but during summer it slows down.  This is because there are less teachers seeing the problems and parents paying less attention.  The only thing that doesn’t slow down is the problem.  These kids have time to begin experimenting with their friends.  Make sure your children have structured activities during the summer.  Keep in touch with your kids,  text them during the day to make sure they are keeping out of trouble.  Be in your kids life. There is so much stuff to do in this city over summer.  We have lakes, theme parks, mini golf, city events, parks, there is no shortage of structured activities for your children to be a part of.

Your brain is constantly developing until your mid 20’s, and the last thing that develops is your ability to make decisions.   You find yourself asking your children “why did you do that?”,  turns out they really don’t know.  Study’s show that if you wait until you’re 25 to try drugs or alcohol, you are 30% less likely to develop an addiction, because your brain is fully developed. If we don’t hold our kids accountable for their actions, they bad things will happen when they grow up.

Be sure to listen to the whole podcast so you don’t miss a thing.
