How Do Drugs Affect Teens In Santa Clarita?…

Cary and Bob began today’s show discussing the dangers of drug use among youth; specifically local Santa Clarita teens. Cary shared a particularly traumatizing story about someone close to him, coming for help. It was an eleven year old, who had been smoking marijuana so much, she didn’t want to go a single day without the drug. The Families In Action hosts’ constantly urge parents to be aware and knowledgeable of their kids whereabouts – which heavily affect the choices of those kids. Next, they brought on Mike Dougherty from Henry Mayo to touch on mental health issues and advancing the awareness of those issues. Mike mentioned that last month (May) was Mental Health Awareness Month. There are many issues which plague and negatively affect the mind, such as: paranoia, depression, suicidal or homicidal thoughts. These topics should not be taken lightly, and Henry Mayo has a dedicated facility to treat and research these diagnoses.

Families And Action Discuss Suicide Rates Amongst Kids And Young Adults…

Next, they discuss the suicide rate among kids and young adults. Mike shared tips and tricks to understand and perceive when those around you are going through a hard time. He also mentioned ways on the other side of the spectrum, for parents to know when their kids are secretly going through hard times. Cary again mentioned his perspective on things as well, stating, “Go with your gut. If you think something is wrong, it is probably wrong. Talk to your kids.” Then Mike added that near 5,000 kids successfully commit suicide every year. A rate which has tripled since the 1950’s.
