Families in Action – March 11, 2013
The guest on the Families in Action today was Kim Mancia who is Addiction Counselor at the Newhall Adult Intensive Outpatient Program for Action Family Counseling, Inc. For the past few weeks Families in Action have been talking about 4 main topics prevention, intervention, treatment and recovery.
Kim Mancia came on to talk about recovery. They first defined sobriety.
“Does being sober mean I stopped drink tequila but I can still have wine?” Quashen asked.
According to Bob Sharits being sober is total abstinence from any addictive or mind altering substance.
People that are former addicts that think they are “cured” are in big trouble. They think that they can still use and not be in trouble but in most cases these people with addictive personalities will search for that high again. The trick is to use your addictive personalities in non destructive ways.
“People with addictive personalities have exactly that,” Quashen said. “I have been sober over 30 years and I have an addictive personality, I just transferred my addiction to work.”
Kim Mancia realized on April 20, 1986, while she was using, getting married, and 3 months pregnant she looked at herself in the mirror and thought to herself “what am I doing?”
Her recovery process was very difficult because she had been using drugs for 6 years and very little coping mechanisms, in fact her normal coping mechanism was using drugs.
The first step is total abstinence of addictive and mind altering substances and then the recovery process can begin.
