Families in Action: March 17, 2014

Families in action wants to wish you a happy St. Patricks day.  Holidays can be a fun time, but it can also be an excuse to drink, so we all want you to be safe.

Today, Families in Action is joined by Marc S.  Marc oversees a sober living facility in Bakersfield.  He helps people through their early recovery and transition into real life.  Sometimes when someone comes out of rehab, they just can not go home to an unsafe place, that’s when sober living comes in.  It is more like a therapeutic community than sober living.  If you can practice the little things living in this community, then you can bring it back to the real world.

Today I have Sam with me, who will be a part of the community  for a year now.  When he came in, he was only 17.  Recovery these days is becoming a younger and younger crowd.  To be this young and coming up on a year sober, we are all proud of Sam.

Sam came to Canyon for the first time just to get a card signed because he was in trouble with the law, never attending again.  The first time Sam did drugs was on New years, he was drunk, and the decision was ultimately his.  It made me feel not like myself, and that’s what I was looking for.  Sam put himself in a hole, overdosing a few times, and slowly dying.  It felt so good, that he didn’t want to stop.  That is the fight that goes on inside the addict,  it feels so good, but it slowly kills you.

Sam got so bad, that his parents saw his life was so bad that his life was unmanageable.  He got hooked up with Action,  stayed at the Action ranch long enough to graduate high school.   I was introduced to Marc, and was placed with the sober living.
