Families in Action: May 19, 2014
Welcome to Families in Action on Santa Clarita’s Hometown Station, AM 1220 KHTS. Bob is out this week, but do not worry, we have Mike Dougherty in studio to help co host.
May is Mental Health Month and we are hear to raise awareness. It is ok to have a cold or the flu, but no one will tell you they have depression or anxiety. We need to erase the stigma around mental health. Licensed Psychotherapist Dilyse Diez joins the show to talk about her practice. Psychotherapy is about helping people get “unstuck” , becoming more successful and living life. Substance abuse is about lack of coping skills, and psychotherapy helps with this issue. We find that a large part of substance abusers start with some underlying issue that has been unresolved. In the past year, 43 million people ages 18 and up admit to suffering to a mental illness, and about 1 in 5 say it stems from their childhood. The typical psychotherapist patient takes around 11 years to admit they need help and seek out a therapist, that is 11 years of bad habits that we need to retrain. If you have some form of mental issue that holds you back from living your life to the fullest, we urge you to get mental therapy help, and not just jump to a pill.
