Controversy Over Urban Outfitters’ “Rx” Flasks and Shot Glasses…

Bob Sharits of Action Family Counseling comes on the air this week to talk about retailer Urban Outfitters’ “Rx” line of drinking flasks, glasses and accessories designed to look like prescription pill bottles and shot-shooters that look like syringes.

The “Rx” line with medically themed products such as “prescription shot glasses,” “syringe shot shooters” and “Rx pint glasses” has sparked an outrage in communities around the nation as campaigns have risen to put a stop to the offensive products.

Since May 1, nearly 4,000 people have signed the petition protesting the products and demanding that Urban Outfitters stop selling them.

“As of 2009 the number of overdose due to drugs surpassed deaths due to automobile accidents,” Sharits said, “and in 2010 there were 16,651 reported deaths involving overdose with prescription pills.”

Families in Action is joined this week by Mayor Bob Kellar and Chrissy McAfee, who became a counselor at Action after her son died of a heroin overdose three years ago.

Mayor Kellar urges that everyone stop purchasing from Urban Outfitters until they discontinue the new “Rx” line, and urges parents to not turn a blind eye to their children’s drug use.

43% of all fatal overdoses’ are the result of prescription medications…

In the National Take-Back Initiative held on April 27 the DEA collected 742,497 pounds of prescription medications from members of the public from more than 5,829 locations manned by 4,312 state, local, and tribal law enforcement agencies that partnered with DEA on the event.
