The holidays are quickly approaching. For those with acohol issues the holidays can be a hard time. The temptation to drink during the holidays is great when celebrating with other family members who may not understand that just having one drink can lead to binging. One must keep an alcoholic addiction in check during the holidays.
It is very hard to explain to family members that one can not drink to avoid falling to addiction again because these addictions are obsessions that are hard to break. Family members can become defensive about drinking addictions when they need to become supportive about avoiding addiction.
Those who struggle with drug addiction can also fall into alcoholism as well. Some addicts believe that they can get away using a drug that they do not like. Using different drugs can lead it to become your drug of choice or lead you back to the drug that you were once using. This innocently starts with experimentation. If you are an addict and are surrounded by alcohol or drugs, being in this type of atmosphere can lead to depression for the addict. Addicts must be honest with themselves and admit that they have an addiction in order to begin on the path to recovery.
Focusing on the positive rather than bringing up the past is helpful for someone in recovery. Its best to try not to open up alcohol in front of recovering family members. Apple cider is a good alternative to alcohol when celebrating with family and friends during the holidays.
