Welcome to Families In Action with your hosts Cary Quashen and Bob Shartis, on your Hometown Station, AM 1220 KHTS.
Mary McGrath, Founder of Dynamic Interventions, joins Families in Action to discuss bullying. Everyone may not be a bully, and everyone isn’t the victim, but everyone is a bystander. Bullying is a bigger problem than people believe as evidence to the rise of child suicide. If your child ever even mentions suicide, always take it serious. And what is one of the most common drugs children use to commit suicide? Advil, Tylenol.
Cyberbullying is the new thing. Traditionally, we think of bullying as someone being punched or pushed into a locker, now with cyber bullying it is much more talking about someone or leaving rumours. It is 24 hours a day, it seems like you just can’t stop it. Now there are sites like Formspring that leaves question anonymously.
58% of kids never tell an adult that they are being cyber bullied, mainly because they fear that their parents reaction will be to shutdown their computer. As parents we need to learn about new healthy ways to deal with cyber bullying. Parents need to encourage their children to not feel into it.
Often times, Girls will hang out with 2 or 3 girls at a time, and every so often, these girls will turn on them. This girl will become withdrawn and distant. These are big signs of potential suicide. In adolescence, in terms of brain development, everything is very black and white. If they feel happy today, then life will always be happy, if they feel bad, then life will always be bad.
