Families in Action: October 7, 2013
Welcome to Families in Action with your hosts Cary Quashen and Bob Shartis on Santa Clarita’s Hometown Station, AM 1220 KHTS. It’s nice to finally have both Cary and Bob in the studio today, we are also joined by Gary Schroeder from Action today.
During an intervention we are also assessing the patient. We need to learn about their spirituality, their physical and mental health how much substance they consume and how long they have been sober. We need to check if they are medically ok. Detox is very dangerous and we need to ask important questions like do you have a history of seizures, do you have a history of heart problems, when is the last time you drank water. We need to make sure they are under the care of a medical professional. 20% of Alcohol detoxes that goes without medical treatment can become fatal. We had a girl come in for treatment and we had to send her straight to the hospital. We have our assessment process and based on that we need to make the next move, whether it is bring them in for treatment or send them to the hospital.
Every Drug and alcohol rehab center needs to be certified by one of two governing boards. We recently went to Sacramento to attend a conference by one of these associations. This industry is moving towards the process of professionalism and heading towards licensing instead of certification. There are multiple licences that we work to get that we don’t need to make sure our facilities are the best they can be. The reason Action does this is to force us to give the patients the highest level of care we can.
