Families in Action: September 30, 2013
Welcome to Families in Action on your Hometown Station, AM 1220 KHTS. September is national recovery month so today we are talking about what it is like to be recovering from addiction. We often hear rumors of statistics saying that it is impossible to recover from addiction, but we know from experience at Action that you can recover.
The disease of addiction is the disease of separation. people that are addicted to substances want to be left alone. Joining us in the studio is recovering addicts Cady, Tim and Ian. Cady describes addiction saying that whether she wanted to or not, getting high was the most important thing. People often assume that addicts are bad people, but it is just good people making bad decisions.
9 out of 10 adults who drink alcohol will not become addicted. Only around 10 to 12% of adult alcohol drinkers will develop alcoholism. Only around 1 out of 10 people have that genetic aspect of them that gets them addicted to alcohol.
Today Cady says her life is completely different. Cady describes herself as the same person but overall happier. Recovering addicts experience spiritual ideals such as forgiveness, honesty and kindness. There is an extra effort in doing these things, because if they don’t put in this effort, then addicts will fall back on their drug of choice.
Tim talks about recovering. Tim describes the hardest parts were looking people in the eye and admitting that he was not always right about everything.
