FREE RECYCLING CONTAINERS AVAILABLE FOR LOCAL BUSINESSES
State Legislation Requires Businesses to Recycle by July 1, 2012
The City of Santa Clarita, in partnership with Burrtec Waste Industries, Inc., is encouraging local businesses to increase waste reduction efforts by offering free, recycling containers.
Beginning Sunday, July 1, 2012, Assembly Bill 341 will require all California businesses that produce more than 4-cubic-yards of commercial solid waste to establish and maintain recycling services.
“The City of Santa Clarita has one of the best waste diversion rates and we want to encourage local businesses to help us in our reduction efforts,” says Mayor Frank Ferry. “By offering free, commercial recycling containers, the City is hoping to make it easier for businesses to transition to the new state mandate so they can better recycle, reduce, and reuse materials that would otherwise be sent to landfills.”
In an effort to conserve landfill space and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, Assembly Bill 341 raised the state’s waste diversion goal from 50 percent, to 75 percent by the year 2020. In September 2011, the City announced that its waste diversion rate was one of the best in Southern California with an all time high of more than 67 percent.
Local businesses are encouraged to get their recycling containers before the July 1st deadline by contacting the Burrtec Waste Industries Inc., Customer Service Department at(661) 222-2249.
Recycling containers are available in 1.5-cubic-yard and 3-cubic-yard sizes, or a 90 gallon cart for smaller businesses that want to save space. All recyclable materials that fit inside the containers are eligible for recycling, including: paper, cardboard, plastics #1-7, glass bottles, and jars.
