Friday matinee with Paul Strickland airs on AM-1220 KHTS every Friday from 12-1 pm
In the first ever Friday matinee, Paul Strickland starts off the New Year by telling Santa Clarita all about what is happening in the art and entertainment community. This week Paul Strickland co –host’s with Tami Toon and focuses on College of the Canyons. Their first guest is Linda Candim, who is the COC Director of Arts and Education. Other guests who will appear on the show today will be KC Manji, a COC Professor and Lori Marie Rios who is the COC Assoc. Professor of music and in charge of some of the musical ensembles at the college.
Linda Candim starts by talking about the foundation of the K through 12 music and arts education in the Santa Clarita Valley. The funding for the art education program comes from the PTA, grants, schools and much more. The purpose of the art education pact is to make sure that every single child in the Santa Clarita Valley has the proper artistic education and opportunities when growing up. Tami Toon explains that spending money on art education will help develop a child’s thought process and critical thinking skills. If we spend money on the children’s art and music now it will pay off in the future with smarter, well rounded students. This program is being extended to every district in the valley and offers multiple opportunities for students to express themselves with zero money from the taxpayer.

This program also brings in artists for school assemblies. These assemblies range from classic ancient Mexican and Latin music, hip hop artists, performance and theater artists and more.
KC Manji, COC Professor and active musician talks about ways that students can become part of the College of the Canyons ensemble and how to prepare for auditions.
