Welcome to Friday Matinee right here on Santa Clarita’s Hometown Station, AM 1220 KHTS. I am your host Paul Strickland. This show is all about the arts and entertainment here in the Santa Clarita Valley.
This is the first day of the month, so that means that it is COC day here at the station. Our first guest today is KC Manji who is the College of the Canyons Director of Musical Instruments. We are happy that you are here because I know there are always new events happening in the world of College of the Canyons music, and only you can tell us about them. Well our next concert is March 22, Friday night at 7:30pm, and it is called “Jazz it”. It will be featuring a lot of new things, we will even have a member of our faculty performing that night. He will be performing a piece that was arranged for him.
So this piece of music you are talking about, has it ever been played before? Well it was heard in an abbreviated form for a small group. But then he wrote it for big band to be premiered with us. An interesting thing about it is that it is all bowed. We hear basses all the time, but not always bowed.
We will also be playing a piece written by another Santa Clarita resident composer.

It is interesting, that piece you where talking about is all bowed. I imagine it being very complicated. Well it is the traditional way to use it. but jazz, you usually pluck the string. When you start dragging the bow in there, you need a lot of skills.
Can the public go see that? And how much does it cost? They are always invited. It is $10 general and $5 seniors and students. We also have open rehearsals, they are always welcome. They are Tuesday night and seven o’clock is a good time to show up, over at pico canyon hall at COC.
There are other ensembles going all week, and anyone is welcome to come by and see what is happening in the school of music.
