Randal Winter is joined by home improvement specialists from Saufley Electric, Thome Waterproofing, NV Landscaping, Marty’s Flooring, Ricardo’s Heating & Air and Pacific Sales.

Randal’s first guest Ben Rodriguez discusses waterproofing your deck.Waterproofing is a process meant to keep ones deck from leaking. Thorough seals help in waterproofing work and acts as a big cement so that water doesn’t leak through. Waterproofing must be done underneath tile because the tile only keeps out the sun but does not protect against leaking. It is beneficial to have your deck waterproofed. For outside projects like your deck the plywood need to be exterior grade. Blocks are put down to keep it from ripping. Then a deck coating system is attached to a piece of metal for decks that are designed for lots of traffic.

Other options are to include a base coat or top coat to protect the deck or including fiberglass to give the deck strength. Then a texture paint is applied or the deck is sealed.

In order to protect your deck from damage, items such as furniture need to have stops put underneath. One should also be careful when placing a satellite dish on a deck as this can lead to entry points for water. This moisture can cause the wood to rot. Also, if you plan to BBQ on your deck do not let grease from the grill stain the deck. Top coats for decks are a good key to keeping your deck maintained.

For the second half of the show Debbie Young of Randal Winter Construction discusses lighting fixtures. Debbie is a trained architect and building designer here to provide tips on improving lighting around the home. Contractors are subject to codes under Title 24 where a project must be approved by the county or city. A good way to maintain your home is by starting with the kitchen and bathroom. LED lighting is a good option to save energy. This high efficiency lighting is a good option over vacancy lighting which only turns the light on with someone in the room. In the kitchen, dimmers on lights help so that the lighting is not so blindingly bright. Placing lights over cabinets can help illuminate spaces when you are working in the kitchen. LED’s can also be placed in places like the living room and bedroom. High efficiency lighting is required for outside spaces and is also a good option if you want your lights to last for years at a time.
