Kellar’s Endorsement Of Whitman Ends Over Immigration Comments

California gubernatorial candidate distances herself from Santa Clarita Councilman.

In a story that just won’t end for Councilman Bob Kellar, California gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman has separated herself from his endorsement, which Kellar voluntarily relinquished. This comes after Councilman Kellar has been dragged through the media over comments he made at an anti illegal immigration rally in Santa Clarita on January 16th.

On that day, Kellar lamented the financial and public safety burdens he believed to be a result of rampant illegal immigration. Kellar reminisced to the crowd about a time when he quoted Teddy Roosevelt before a Council meeting some years ago. Afterwards, Kellar said that he was approached by a few people who said “Bob, you sound like a racist.” Kellar’s reply was “That’s good. If that’s what you think I am because I happen to believe in America, I’m a proud racist, you’re darn right I am.” For more on Kellar’s original comments, click here.

Since then, a media circus has erupted with one version selling on a state and national level, and uniquely different one reporting the local impacts in the Santa Clarita Valley.

Kellar has repeatedly said that he wished he used a different word, and that he is not a racist. At Tuesday night’s City Council meeting, over 50 people addressed Kellar’s comments and not a single one admitted to believing that Kellar was actually a racist. All other City Council members publicly agreed that they knew Kellar well enough to know that he was not a racist. Read more from that night by clicking here.

However sensationalism is infectious, and Whitman’s actions have sparked another round of buzz, this time in an Associated Press (AP) story which claims Kellar has no regrets over the remark. However speaking with KHTS just days after the incident, Kellar said “I wish I would have not used that word, but that is the word that had been mentioned to me.”

While the story has received some clarification in Santa Clarita, the political fallout from Kellar’s words seems to continue to haunt him in the larger media arena.

Whitman is one of two major Republican candidates for California Governor. State Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner is also vying for the Republican ticket.
