The second round of champions have been crowned by Kern County Raceway Park Saturday night.

 Near 2,000 fans watched six races at the “Faith & Family Night”.   Eric Richardson, Brock Thompson, and Rich Delong III snagged the half-mile wins.   Buddy Shepherd, Ryan Vargas, and Chip Carroll won the quarter-mile races.

Tyler Bannister, in Bandoleros and Buddy Shepherd, in Legends won the INEX championships.  David Mayhew celebrated his championship in the NASCAR CITGO Lubricants Late Model event.

The CITGO 50 lap affair kicked off with a wild start when Robby Sawyer went four wide up the inside to take the lead into turn one.  The four wide collapsed and caused heavy contact between Irwindale visitor Andrew Porter and Lance Wilson, ending both of their evenings.

On the restart, Johnny White took over the lead and held it for the first four laps before Eric Richardson and Mayhew drove past him.  Mayhew remained in tow with Richardson throughout the event that did not see another caution.

Despite heavy lapped traffic and lapping past third place finish Sawyer, Mayhew was never able to close in on Richardson.  Richardson cruised to a 1.405 second victory for his fourth win of the year.  Mayhew will focus squarely on next weekend’s NAPA Auto Parts 150 for the NASCAR K&N Pro Series, West after claiming the CITGO title.

“We’ve had some really good races and good luck; that’s what it takes,” Mayhew said.  “Some years you got it and some years you don’t.  These guys behind me gave me what I needed to get the job done.  We went out and handled business this year!”

Chip Carroll’s win came in the hotly contested Fastor Pastor 15 lap race on the quarter-mile, utilizing NASCAR Mini Stocks.  Carroll, the pastor at Sunshine Church, charged from seventh starting position to take the inaugural event against an eight car field.  A late caution period with four laps to go brought the field together, but Carroll was able to pull away from Westside Believer Fellowship youth pastor George Harmer with Valley Bible Fellowship pastor Brad Lawson in third.

Brock Thompson won his first NASCAR Spec-Mod race, leading the last eight laps after points leader Chris Dalton slowed with mechanical problems.  Thompson won in just his third start with the division.  The exciting back-and-forth race saw Sid Payne lead the first seven laps before Dalton took over.

Eric Brust fought off Dylan Hagar for second and Payne took fourth by a nose over Tim Esmay to round out the top-five finishers.

Opening night INEX Legends winner Brent Scheidmantle of Alta Loma claimed the 30 lap victory while runner-up 14 year-old Buddy Shepherd took the division championship for the season.  Eddie Garone led the first five laps before spinning down the front stretch with Shepherd and Scheidmantle sneaking by.

Shepherd led the first two laps off of the restart before Scheidmantle made the decisive pass for the lead and the win.  Garone charged back to fourth behind Eric Olson as the only other lead lap finishers.  Scheidmantle was disqualified in post-race inspection for illegal fuel, giving Shepherd his fourth win this year to go along with the title.

Ryan Vargas charged from his third starting position to lead lap one of the INEX Bandoleros feature, but it was Tyler Bannister claiming the 2013 series championship with his second place finish.

Bannister won eight times this year while Vargas’ tally was four on the season.  Vargas’ lead evaporated when Colton Page spun in turn two on lap 13.

Rich Delong III goes four-for-four on the year in Street Stock competition taking the 15 lap feature in a close race over fast-time qualifier Howie Smith.

The regular racing season ends at Kern County Raceway Park next Saturday night with the NAPA Auto Parts 150 for the NASCAR K&N Pro Series, West!  They will be joined by championship races for the NASCAR CITGO Lubricants Late Models and NASCAR Spec-Mods, presented by Dickey’s BBQ.  Races will get underway at 5:30 p.m. and the show will be followed by a Zambelli Fireworks Spectacular.
