The newest home for local news, talk and where people can find out what’s happening in the community will be the former home of Newhall Hardware.

The location, which is in the heart of Newhall on Main Street, is currently undergoing construction work and refurbishments to make the former storefront the perfect home for a community-based radio station and news outlet.

“We’re really excited about our future new home,” said Carl Goldman, co-owner of KHTS AM-1220. “We believe we can be another positive addition to Old Town Newhall, and we look forward to even more visitors who’ll be able to walk by and see our broadcast studio in action.”

Total Financial Solutions is signed on as a co-owner of the property, and plans to move its headquarters into the building, as well.

Arif Halaby, owner of Total Financial Solutions, currently hosts “The Safer Money Hour,” a show airing on KHTS AM-1220 on Tuesdays from noon to 2 p.m. The show is also broadcast on SCVTV at 4 p.m. on Tuesday.

Halaby is excited to be a part of the area’s revitalization, he said. He thanked Santa Clarita city officials for their leadership and recent efforts to improve the historic area.

“It’s an honor to be a part of the legacy of Old Town Newhall, and a caretaker for one of the best businesses in the history of downtown Newhall, which, of course, is Newhall Hardware,” Halaby said.

Plans for the new home include a coffee shop storefront, allowing locals to enjoy their favorite KHTS shows while they enjoy their favorite local brew.

Radio station officials are still in the process of discussing potential partners for the coffee shop aspect of the move.

“We don’t want a franchise in there,” Carl Goldman said, “we’re looking to have a locally owned business attached to it with experience — someone who understands the community.”

KHTS co-owners Carl Goldman and Jeri Seratti Goldman are planning for a grand opening of the station’s new home in early spring.

“We’re looking forward to being able to hold events at our new pace,” said Jeri Seratti Goldman, “and to having our new home for this community-based business be a part of some of the great events the city of Santa Clarita has been hosting in the area. It’s very exciting.”

  6. Mr. Halaby and KHTS should check for some institutional knowledge about how/why Old Town Newhall actually came to be revitalized. It was a long process that was mainly started/driven by citizens, not so called City leaders. We had folks from successful rehab projects such as Brea and Old Town Pasadena come out to educate the City, including our supposed “leaders”. It started at least 15 or more years ago when the City and City Manager (Caravalho) were challenged to do something real. Ruth Newhall, Doc Rioux and many others were able to convince the City to pay for an independent planner to come in which generated the Freeman Plan/Report and architectural themes, which eventually become part of the planning/design overlay. The City, including staff and “leaders” have actually made many errors in putting the Freeman Plan into place, such as constructing the Railroad bypass (Freeman said not to do that), back in parking, an expensive roundabout, etc. Many of these City efforts led to the demise of certain businesses in Old Town Newhall, including Newhall Hardware. Hopefully we will continue to see growth and a resurgence in keeping with the Freeman themes/standards. How about putting an authentically colored bronze statue of William S. Hart and his horse Fritz in that roundabout now? It is one of the main gateways to the City and to Old Town Newhall.

  7. Fantastic move! Love seeing you now in the heart of Santa Clarita and great exposure now to all of the passing train riders. Great idea with the coffee shop in the Lobby. Big time congrats on the move!!!!
