Life Leadership with Alex Urbina – August 26, 2013
On today’s show Alex and Wendy sit down and talk with SCVi Charter School and talk about going back to school and starting a new year.
What is great about SCVi is that you do not just tell the students where to sit but before school starts you have an event where you just mingle.
“In an event like this we are having learners see that their are more than one way to learn,” a SCVi Facilitator said. “We get to learn about the kids even before we step into a classroom is a great and different way to approach education.”
What is multi-age, Alex said.
Multi-age is when we have two or more classroom that develop communities so we learn together. Multi-age education is a great way to make sure every learner is getting the help or challenge if needed.
Multi-age education that SCVi has implemented allows students to push themselves and allows students to excel if they are ready.
“Our multi-age classes are merged and we are all in the same class and we make sure their needs are getting met,” a facilitator said.
It is great that SCVi are really big and focused on developing leadership and social values and not just the traditional book learner, Alex said.
“We don’t tell them the answer,” a facilitator said. “We ask them questions where they get it on their own.”
As facilitators, we need to model being risk takers so our learners will show what it looks and as feels like and follow suit.
