On today’s show host Alex Urbina and co-host Wendy Amara sit down and talk about Environment, challenging you both positive and negative. Alex and Wendy are joined by Amber Raskin, Director of SCVi Charter School and Elaine Williams, facilities project manager at SCVi Charter.
What an environment can do is more than just appearance, Alex said. It really affects you a on a deeper level. Being clean and tidy can affect you for the better mentally. It can affect you negatively if you go too far but a in between area is key.
A clutter room does clutter the mind, Wendy said.
At SCVi we keep our space nontraditional just as in our teaching process, Raskin said. We try to give space and let our learners grow.
The creative process is better developed from an open-space area. We try and model the big companies such as Apple and Google.
A traditional classroom is set-up as chairs in a row looking one-way with 30 to 35 desks to keep you isolated. But we have our kids face each other and often use round table to connect to each other.
In your classrooms, how do you remove distractions. Such as posters, white-boards, etc.
There are distractions everywhere, work, home, driving, so we encourage the learners a way to fight through them and help develop a system that works for them to stay focused.
