Life Leadership with Alex Urbina – June 10, 2013
On today’s show Alex and Wendy talk with Annette Trejo about abusive relationships and what it means to be in one and where you can go and how to define and identify one.
How do you define abusive relationship, Alex said.
“There is a big difference from a bad relationship and an abusive relationship,” Annette said. “It is normal to say people argue, it is weird to say but it happens.”
“We just don’t want to get it to go beyond that,” she said. “You have to ask yourself if this person is helping me out or holding me back. It gets abusive when your personal freedom gets halted.”
When I hear that you have to ask yourself, “Where they come from?” Where are they coming from, love? hate?, Alex said.
Try and be aware of the love you are receiving and what you should be getting back and are you truly getting that, Alex said.
To me when I hear domestic or abusive relationships, I think of the movies when someone shows up with bruises and black eyes but it is so much more, Alex said.
Constant put downs are signs of an abusive relationships, Annette said.
Others include explosive temper, extreme jealousy or insecurity, financial control, big mood swings, and preventing you from doing what you want to do.
I see put downs as being unconscious about it, you do not have to accept it, Alex said. You have to be worth more and realize that.
