Life Leadership with Alex Urbina – November 04, 2013
On today’s show, Alex and Wendy sit down with two facilitators from SCVi Charter and discuss their Final Mile Challenge, an event that allowed their learners to run a marathon over the span of two months.
This event is not only to allow the kids to have fun with fitness, but we started to hear stories, a SCVi facilitator said.
One that stands out is that the learner created a goal to get it done and would run a mile three times out of the day. This brought together the family because the student would walk the dog and ask mom, dad, brother, and sister to go with them and creating a weekly activity.
Learners said they are going to miss going out with their family and we said it doesn’t have to stop.
Students ended their two month journey at the Santa Clarita Marathon with a final mile push to complete a 26.2 mile marathon.
The program was open to K-6 grade and it developed and gave a chance for grades to bond with other grade levels. While the kids were running and walking everyone cheered each other and grew.
Traditional schools do not really do this type of learning, the learning within, and that is what I love about SCVi, Alex said.
