Life Leadership with Alex Urbina – October 7,  2013

On today’s show, Alex and Wendy talk about connecting with your children and how important that really is. How by doing so it will help your kids grow in the classroom and outside the class as well. They sit down with two facilitators from SCVi Charter School.

Connecting isn’t just saying hi how are you, Wendy said. I is a connection however we are talking about connecting on a different level.

How do you talk about connecting and how do you connect with your children.

At SCVi Charter school we treat them with the same respect we want to be and have a different plan for each learner/student, a SCVi Facilitator said. We work on creating plans and develop the kids emotionally as well, not just traditional education.

You are almost like a proud mother, concerned about your kids, Alex said.

We are, the relationships we build expand beyond the classroom, a facilitator said. Two learners that I had my first year I still stay in touch with because of the relationships we have. And it is great because they come back and help with the younger learners.

That kind of relationship just doesn’t happen on its own, Alex said. You have to go and create it, put in the time to make it develop.

I know I am making a difference when learners come back and say they remember me.

On today’s show, Alex and Wendy sit down and talk about enabling in life and in parenting. What is enabling and are you aware that you might be enabling other and even your children.

When I was younger I grew up in a household were enabling was present and I told myself that I would not have my kids grow up the same way, Alex said.

But we must define what enabling is.

Enabling means you are shifting things around for someone so it makes it easier for them to do something that isn’t beneficial for them, Wendy said.

I looked up on the internet about what enabling is and it gave me two definitions, one positive and negative.

We are going to talk about the negative, Alex said.

Enabling can be small things like cleaning your room, having good hygiene, doing your homework do have consequences.

When your child comes up to you and says I didn’t do my homework and you give them a pass rather than going to school and owning up to them dropping the ball they will never learn.

There are different levels of enabling. The small issues grow into bigger as life progresses.

How to support parents to enable their children?

I think it is easier to stop wherever you are at and stop teaching your child to grow bad habits, Wendy said.

When we are parents we want the best for our kids, Alex said. It was hard but I had to force myself not to make it easier for them, but be aware and catch myself from saying yes and say no. Even if you can help, be supportive but say no.
