A brand new event benefiting area high school golf teams will tee off at TPC at Valencia February 27 and 28. The inaugural Newhall Land Cup is expected to feature two days of outstanding and intense play by the boys Varsity golf teams from Hart, Saugus, Canyon and Valencia High Schools; Golden Valley and West Ranch High Schools have also been invited to field players. And after 36 holes of medal/stroke play at Tournament Players Club Valencia one of the teams will emerge victorious to take home the Newhall Land Cup. Each participating school will receive a cash contribution toward their team. Newhall Land, community planners of Valencia and the future hometown of Newhall Ranch, is title sponsor of the tournament.
Newhall Land President Greg McWilliams conceived the first-ever tournament to showcase the talent of local of high school golfers in the first –class setting provided by the two-year old Valencia course. “These young men are tremendous athletes who are passionate about the game of golf and who dedicate themselves to honing their skills. What better reward for that hard work than to compete with their peers, cheered on by family and friends, on one of the most beautiful courses in the state.” Girls’ teams will take to the greens to battle it out in October during their season of competition. Future tournaments will expand to include varsity teams from the valley’s two newer high schools.
The first-ever event will get a champions kick off on February 26, when players, coaches, parents, and golf fans gather for an evening reception at the Oaks Grill in the TPC Clubhouse. The next day, will see each school pitting their best players against one another, and the challenging course, which is the signature attraction of the Valencia village of Westridge. Built into the rolling, oak-studded hills west of Interstate 5, TPC at Valencia presents a true test for the avid golfer, with highs and lows of the game played out amid rolling terrain, serene open areas and city view terraces. It also the only TPC course in California.
Each team features five players. The four lowest individual scores from each team will used to calculate the team’s overall score. A second trophy will be awarded for best individual score.
