River Rally – September 20th 2008

Saturday morning, a large group of Santa Clarita residents decided to start their weekend off with a good deed.

Over a thousand drove or bicycled to a vacant lot near the Via Princessa Bridge off of Wiley Canyon Road, where they donned gloves and lugged trash bags through the Santa Clara riverbed, picking up litter as they walked.

The event, which began at 8:00 a.m., was aided by cool weather and a high turnout; expected to be over 1,200. Large “dump stations” reaped the catches of the day; rusted shopping carts, half-disintegrated bicycles and fast food wrappers galore.
Also accompanying the festivities was an Environmental Expo.

“It’s a place for our sponsors, city programs and local environmental groups to showcase information for our environmentally conscious residents,” said Mark Patti, of the City’s Environmental Services division.

[view:node_ad=5]The term “environmentally conscious” these days can be applied to almost everyone, as evidenced by the wide variety of families, high school students, active adults and senior citizens in attendance.
