Local athletes do well in international competition.
Santa Clarita’s silver lining – with a touch of bronze –
made us proud during this year’s Olympic games. Silver medals are coming home
with hometown heroes BMX cyclist Mike Day, softball player Crystl Bustos and
sprinter Allyson Felix, while runner David Neville, who moved to Santa Clarita
to be near his trainer, dove over the finish line in a dramatic end of the men’s
440 meter dash Thursday night.
Day was the favorite for the gold before the races were
postponed due to rain, but lost his favorite lane to Latvian Maris Stromberg during
three semi-finals run right before the medal race. Stromberg left other riders
in the dust, including Day, whose 36.606 time landed him in second place to Stromberg’s
36.190 run. Fellow American rider Donny Robinson took the bronze with a time of
36.972.
