Santa Clarita To Break Ground For McBean Park-And-Ride

The Santa Clarita City Council and the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) invites community members to attend a groundbreaking event on Thursday January 17, 2013 at 3:00 p.m. for the new McBean Park-and-Ride Project.

The $4 million project includes local and federal funding partners, including the Metro Call for Projects program, which provided $2.97 million, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) and the Congestion Mitigation and the Air Quality Improvement Program from the Federal Transit Administration (FTA).

The new park-and-ride facility at the McBean Regional Transfer Station will include 282 new parking spaces and an additional five bus bay platform to accommodate more buses.

The expanded station will also include landscape beautification, the addition of 171 trees with 51 oak trees, a monument wall, public art exhibits, low impact site lighting using L.E.D. technology, a security system and sustainable design elements.

“The new McBean Park-and-Ride project will serve to better address the growing transit needs for both local and commuter transit passengers as well as rideshare participants,” said Mayor Bob Kellar.  “The existing station, which was built in early 2002, will also greatly benefit nearby residents, employment and retail centers, and students from CalArts, Masters College and the College of the Canyons.”

The 4.9 acre project, which will open in fall 2013, will increase access to local and regional transit routes, address parking capacity issues at existing park-and-ride areas, reduce traffic and improve air quality.

“With $2.97 million MTA Call for Projects funding, the new McBean Park and Ride will be another vital link in our county-wide transportation system,” said L.A. County Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich, Chairman of the Metro Board. “Santa Clarita Valley commuters will be able to carpool or vanpool from here, as well as connect with local Santa Clarita transit buses, Metrolink and express buses into the Los Angeles region.”
