The month of September is National Preparedness Month and to help residents prepare and plan for emergency situations, the City of Santa Clarita is hosting two informational workshops.  

National Preparedness Month is hosted by FEMA’s Ready campaign and encourages family, friends and co-workers to review and update emergency plans. This should include an evacuation route out of the home, out of state contacts, a designated meeting place and a minimum of three days of supplies.

“Being prepared in advance of disasters is more important than ever. This month-long effort is designed to turn awareness into action by encouraging residents to make an emergency preparedness plan,” commented Mayor Bob Kellar. “We want to provide community members with resources, tips and information so residents can be self-reliant during emergencies.”

The first emergency preparedness class kicks off with a Weather Spotter Training and Recruitment on Wednesday, September 18, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Century Room at City Hall. Hosted by the National Weather Service, this free session will offer an insider’s look at forecasting weather patterns and provide examples of severe weather condition reports. No RSVP is required.

Residents can also learn how to prepare their pets by attending a free workshop onTuesday, September 24, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Valencia Library, located at 23743 Valencia Boulevard.  The Take Care of the Entire Family – A Pet Preparedness Workshop event will provide best practices for keeping pets safe during an emergency

from animal experts. The session will also include pet supplies and tips so participants can assemble an emergency kit complete with food, water, plastic bags, a First Aid Kit, a pet photo, leash, collar medications, immunization and vet records. Door prizes and giveaways will be featured at this event.  No RSVP is required.
