Wilk Weekly Update – October 9, 2013
Here is what he went over…
- Higher Education Oversight Hearing on Public College Affordability @UCSB (10/7)
- Average UC student debt is $18,346 and CSU student debt is $16,648
- In the 2012-13 academic year, 685,000 new and renewal students qualified for a Cal Grant award
- 15-20,000 qualified students were denied CSU admission due to lack of funding
- A recent study concluded that if CA doesn’t make the proper educational investments we will be short 1 million qualified workers in 2025
- Last Week for Governor to sign or veto bills
- Governor Brown has until October 13th to sign or veto bills. If he doesn’t act on the bills then it will become law
- Governor Brown signed SB 97 – Appropriates up to $100 million to backfill the California Community Colleges for property tax revenue that failed to appear in 2012-13 due to the end of redevelopment agencies
- Governor Brown vetoed AB 1401 – Authorizes non-citizen to serve on criminal and civil juries, a duty currently reserved only for citizens in all 50 states
- Community Coffee Program
