The City of Santa Clarita unveiled a new art exhibit, “Surviving Assimilation: The Contemporary Native American Through the Lens of Peggy Fontenot,” on February 5, 2015. The exhibit will be displayed through June 5, 2015 in the Community Room at the Old Town Newhall Library, located at 24500 Main Street.
Peggy Fontenot is an award-winning local artist whose photography has been displayed at the Smithsonian’s Museum of the American Indian, the New Mexico Museum of Art, the Eiteljorg and Heard Museums, the Autry National Center, the Museum of History and Art Ontario and the National Vietnam Veterans Art Museum. Working solely in film, Fontenot devotes her work to relevant social issues within the Native American and veteran communities.
The “Surviving Assimilation: The Contemporary Native American Through the Lens of Peggy Fontenot” exhibit will feature a collection of images portraying the strength of Native Americans in the face of assimilation.
A free public reception to celebrate the exhibit and Fontenot’s work will be held from 6:00 p.m.to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 25, 2015 at the First Floor Gallery at City Hall, located at 23920 Valencia Boulevard. Guests will be able to greet Fontenot and enjoy live music and light appetizers.
