SCV Highlights: Student Photographers Exhibiting Eastern Influences At Japan Foundation

The work of three College of the Canyons photography students will be prominently featured in the “After Mikiko Hara: Floating in the Moment” Student Photography Exhibition opening at the Japan Foundation Los Angeles (JFLA) on Friday night.

Coordinated in large part by COC photography instructor Lee White, and inspired by the images of Japanese photographer Mikiko Hara, the exhibition features works from students at COC and Pierce College who took part in a master class led by the Japanese artist. The master class was organized through a partnership with the Getty Museum.

Images were juried by JFLA representatives and photography instructors from both colleges.

COC students Fara Moravej, Lee Gomez and Taylor Sietsema were among five students selected between the two schools.

“I helped direct the COC photography students from the master class, but each student really found his or her own inspiration from the Hara photography when they created their images,” White said.

The trio is responsible for 15 of the exhibition’s 24 photos, with Gomez’s “Yellow Taxi” image getting the nod as the event’s promotional work.

Incredibly, Moravej is responsible for 46 percent of the entire gallery’s display, with 11 photographs selected.

Other instrumental figures were Wendy Brill-Wynkoop and Juan Renteria of the COC photography department, who assisted in the production and preparation of student images for the exhibition.

The exhibition “After Mikiko Hara: Floating in the Moment” opens at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6. Admission is free and open to the public.

Those wishing to visit the gallery during normal business hours can do so from noon to 7 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays and noon to 4 p.m. on Wednesdays and Fridays.

The exhibition will also be open from noon to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 14 and Saturday, Feb. 28. The exhibition is closed on Sundays and Mondays.

Opened in 1983, the JFLA promotes international awareness and mutual understanding between Japan and the U.S. through cultural exchange.

The Japan Foundation Los Angeles is located at 5700 Wilshire Blvd., Suite 100. For more information visitwww.jflalc.org or call (323) 761-7510.
