The topic was New Year’s resolutions.

Here is what they had to say on the Senior Hour.

Dr Thomas Polucki: “I would like to talk about New Year’s resolutions, the whole concept in general. Transformation for me is kind of a part time obsession, a hobby of mine and the whole concept of such an artificial construct of ‘it’s January 1 I’m about to change everything I’ve conditioned my whole life to behave as, just because it is January 1st.’ This just isn’t real for most people and will power alone may get you through the first couple of weeks of your commitment to how you are going to make this transformation but ultimately it fails for the overwhelming majority of people.  By February most people have totally given up on their resolution.

“The reason that we behave the way that we do, the reason that we are the way that we are in the situation that we are is because we have adopted certain beliefs, certain strategies. How we behave, how we cope, how we deal with day-to-day situations? Basically everything boils down a question when something presents itself, if something is not filtered out, you have to ask yourself the question, is this in my best interest? How does this measure up against everything I believe in and hold to be true? Is this really for me or not?

“The primary thing driving people is why? Why should I? And a lot of people don’t make that consideration; they buy into this concept of ‘OK it is December 31st I am going to change in this way.’ And they don’t ever bother to say, if it’s weight, if you are going to try and lose 20 pounds. If you haven’t really analyzed why you are making the change, what does it mean, what is that belief, and what does that mean to you. More importantly, why do you need to lose the 20 pounds and what are you willing to do. Most people never even bother to consider those things and that is why it is going to fail every time.
