Wildcats Lose 34-31 To Oxnard To Conclude Record-Breaking Year

The West Ranch Wildcats’ record-breaking season is over after a 34-31 loss to the Oxnard Yellowjackets in Round 2 of CIF Division 6 Playoffs on Friday night.

West Ranch met its match against an Oxnard team that came into this game ranked No. 2 in Southern Section Division 6 rankings. Despite the challenge, the Wildcats took it to Oxnard and kept the game close all the way until the very last play of the game.

Jovan and Ryan Camacho, the dynamic duo of brothers that helped drive the Wildcats’ success this year, did everything they could to help their team win. The pair of brothers had another monster game for their school by combining for two rushing touchdowns, two receiving touchdowns and three interceptions.

Despite their best efforts, the Wildcats came up just short of advancing to the next round of playoffs. A costly interception was thrown by West Ranch quarterback Weston Eget, and was returned for a touchdown to put Oxnard ahead 34-24 early in the fourth quarter.

That lead would prove to be too much to overcome for West Ranch. A touchdown by Ryan Camacho late in the fourth quarter cut the deficit down to a field goal, but Oxnard got the first downs they needed to run out the clock to end the game.

Foothill League football has come to an end for the teams in the valley, and West Ranch secured second place with a record of 3-2 (tied with Hart and Saugus) after finishing 1-4 and tied for last place just last year.

In fact, West Ranch hasn’t had more than two wins in a season since the 2010-11 season. After starting their season 8-0, their best start in school history, West Ranch finishes with more wins in a season in eight years.

A lot of questions will be raised next year regarding who will takeover the holes left by the Camacho brothers and Eget, as they are all seniors. For now, the Wildcats can celebrate a season that will deservedly be preserved in the history books.
