Heads up is an equestrian therapy program founded in 1986 by Nancy Pitchford. The staff is dedicated to providing quality therapy to disabled children and adults with physical, mental and emotional disabilities. Trained instructors and therapists give private and group lessons that challenge participants by placing them on horseback regardless of their limitations. In addition to the physical and mental stimulation riders experience, they also have an opportunity to learn basic horsemanship skills such as grooming and feeding.
Their facility on Bouquet Canyon sustained heavy damage from the Buckweed fire. Flames quickly consumed a mobile home belonging to Heads Up Director Jim Tindell and other structures located on the property. While evacuating horses from Heads Up, Jim received 2nd and 3rd degree burns – which sent him to the Grossman Burn Center in Sherman Oaks for treatment. After 4-months of treatment and rehabilitation, Jim Tindell is home with his family. With additional surgeries and physical therapy ahead, Jim is glad to be home and continues to heal from this ordeal.
Mark your calendar for Saturday, March 29, 2008. The 2008 Jim Tindell Bowl-A-Thon will be held at Santa Clarita Lanes with all proceeds benefiting Heads Up Therapy On Horseback.
KHTS thanks Michael Holt and Dee Gadbury for stopping by the KHTS Community Resource Station.
